The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Commanders watched Ryan Fitzgerald slide 90 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They will need Hairston to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 29 they get juice off the edge, and a steal at that.
Maxwell Hairston at Round 2, Pick 29 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Quinshon Judkins in the 148th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Ryan Fitzgerald in pick No. 207 is close to grand larceny; a specialist that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Jack Kiser at pick 238 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Clay Webb at slot 250 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
