You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Jalin Conyers at Round 7, Pick 32, roughly 81 spots before his name belonged.
The Lawson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get a featured back at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Derrick Harmon at No. 44 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Deone Walker is a better player than the 81st overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Deontae Lawson in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Lathan Ransom at pick No. 168 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Circle this one: Billy Bowman Jr. at pick 170 is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They robbed the room for Chris Paul Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Chandler Rivers in pick No. 189 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 209 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Jalin Conyers in No. 248 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
