The Cowboys bet big and early on Vincent Anthony Jr., 57 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
Taking Jacob Rodriguez in pick No. 95 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value said wait; Kaleb Proctor in the 112th overall pick says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into George Gumbs Jr. at No. 152, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Vincent Anthony Jr. in slot 171, miles early. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Nothing to complain about; Domani Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr at Round 5, Pick 40 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nice patience on VJ Payne, who had no business lasting to pick No. 202. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Kendrick Law still on the board at the 218th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
