The curious call sets the tone. With quarterback, running back and other spots still glaring, the Chiefs used No. 133 on DJ James, a cornerback they were not exactly short of. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The James value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The Gould reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd pick they get a go-to option on the outside, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Patrick Paul slid further than he should have, and pick 64 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Khyree Jackson a notch or two before his time. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking DJ James at cornerback with quarterback, running back and other spots open.
Malik Mustapha in pick No. 158 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jaylan Ford in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jared Wiley at No. 210 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Anthony Gould in slot 250, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
