New England Patriots

Larceny in the Round 5 slot lands the Patriots a C+, Gabriel and all.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Dillon Gabriel, the No. 76 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 144th overall pick. A mixed bag that lands at C+.

The Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.18 · Pick 18 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 10
In No. 18 they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Jack Sawyer · DE-EDGE · rank 7
They robbed the room for Jack Sawyer here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Quinshon Judkins · RB · rank 78
This one needs a full-page explanation: Quinshon Judkins in the 40th pick, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Donovan Jackson · OG · rank 58
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 32 with a little surplus value in Donovan Jackson. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 52
Colston Loveland at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.32 · Pick 96 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 79
Nice patience on Nick Emmanwori, who had no business lasting to pick 96. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.7 · Pick 108 · Tez Johnson · WR · rank 151
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tez Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.32 · Pick 133 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 128
They did well to land DeMonte Capehart in slot 133, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Dillon Gabriel · QB · rank 76
They barely believed it either: Dillon Gabriel still on the board at the 144th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.6 · Pick 220 · Davison Igbinosun · CB · rank 185
Davison Igbinosun in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.22 · Pick 236 · J.C. Davis · OT · rank 227
Value with a capital V on J.C. Davis in pick 236, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.40 · Pick 254 · Stone Handy · LB-EDGE · rank 277
They left a pile of value on the table to take Stone Handy this early at Round 7, Pick 40. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
