The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Commanders watched Antwane Wells Jr. slide 76 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The Johnson Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Caleb Williams at No. 7 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Newton. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No edge and no loss on Amarius Mims in slot 71; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Troy Fautanu in pick No. 100 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Brenden Rice at the 107th pick for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Luke Lachey went about where he belonged in the 144th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Antwane Wells Jr. in No. 185 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A wild overpay on Montrell Johnson Jr. in pick 228, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
