Green Bay Packers

A solid, sensible weekend for the Packers: B-.

It is a puzzling start. The Packers had quarterback, wide receiver and other spots to solve and reached instead for James Williams, a safety, at the 135th pick. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. However the rest shakes out, Jones at that price is a win they earned.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 31
In the Round 1 slot they get a rangy last line of defense at fair value. More want than need.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 47
Kris Jenkins at slot 41 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Jonathon Brooks · RB · rank 62
They took Jonathon Brooks at par in the 57th pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 83
Mike Sainristil at pick 88 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 86
Marist Liufau in Round 3, Pick 28 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 126
Javon Foster in No. 125 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · James Williams · S · rank 130
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. James Williams in the Round 4 slot leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots for later.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 206
No edge and no loss on Tanor Bortolini in the 203rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Brevyn Spann-Ford · TE · rank 216
A straight-up fair deal on Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick No. 217, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Myles Jones · CB · rank 204
Myles Jones slipping to the 219th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Ja'Had Carter · S · rank 240
A clean, defensible pick in Round 7, Pick 26 with a little surplus value in Ja'Had Carter. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
