The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Johnny Dixon, the No. 181 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 6 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
The Packers indulged a want in Bishop while a need in quarterback, tight end and other spots stayed open. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Max Melton in slot 58, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Javon Bullard in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Nice patience on Jaylen Wright, who had no business lasting to pick 88. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Jonah Elliss at par in the 91st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at pick No. 92, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nothing to complain about; Caelen Carson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 9: Cole Bishop adds a safety while quarterback, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
They did well to land Javon Foster in the 127th pick, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. at pick No. 129 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Malik Mustapha in pick 163 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Trevor Keegan at the 168th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had Luke McCaffrey higher than No. 179, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay M.J. Devonshire at Round 6, Pick 29 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Johnny Dixon at slot 216 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Michael Barrett at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
Ryan Cooper Jr. slipping to the 247th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tayvion Robinson in No. 251. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
