Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent slot 211 on Joey Slackman, a name the board had a full 101 spots lower. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Getting Lambert-Smith where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
The Kris Jenkins deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a weapon on the perimeter at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Kaleb Johnson at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Jalon Walker in the 49th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Omarr Norman-Lott in pick 76 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Denzel Burke in the 119th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Brashard Smith was still sitting there in No. 149, and they pounced on premier running back value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Steal is underselling it; Hollin Pierce at Round 5, Pick 33 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Ajani Cornelius in pick No. 197, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Quincy Riley at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Carson Vinson. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Joey Slackman in the 211th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brady Cook this early at pick 239. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They robbed the room for KeAndre Lambert-Smith here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
