You build a draft on nights like this. M.J. Devonshire had no business being available in the 216th overall pick, and the Packers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a C and check back in two years.
Tagovailoa has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
The Packers indulged a want in Bishop while a need in tight end and interior defensive lineman stayed open. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 1, Pick 25, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Javon Bullard at the 58th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They took Max Melton at par in slot 88, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at No. 91 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves tight end and interior defensive lineman untouched.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jarrian Jones well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Elijah Jones this early at the 168th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
JD Bertrand in Round 6, Pick 29 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
You do not let a cornerback like M.J. Devonshire reach the 216th overall pick and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had Javontae Jean-Baptiste higher than No. 236, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Taulia Tagovailoa in pick 243, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Joshua Cephus at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
