Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Josh Newton, the No. 121 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 180.
Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Nice patience on Graham Barton, who had no business lasting to the 34th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A quiet steal in pick 68: Jermaine Burton for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Javon Baker is a better player than Round 4, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Braelon Allen at pick No. 137 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Josh Newton in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A tight end of that caliber at slot 193 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Circle this one: Ryan Flournoy at the 231st pick is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
