Las Vegas Raiders

A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a B-, for the Raiders.

Start where it matters. The Raiders took Fernando Mendoza to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.

Reaching for Payton left real value on the table behind him. Bisontis at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Fernando Mendoza · QB · rank 4
In pick No. 1 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Omar Cooper Jr. · WR · rank 55
They talked themselves into Omar Cooper Jr. at No. 36, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Emmanuel McNeil-Warren · S · rank 51
A tidy bit of business in slot 67, where Emmanuel McNeil-Warren graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Chase Bisontis · OG · rank 71
The board fumbled Chase Bisontis all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Chris McClellan · DT · rank 137
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Chris McClellan. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Harold Perkins Jr. · LB · rank 129
Harold Perkins Jr. at pick 134 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.35 · Pick 175 · Ar'maj Reed-Adams · OG · rank 165
Ar'maj Reed-Adams slid further than he should have, and the 175th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.4 · Pick 185 · Patrick Payton · DL-EDGE · rank 243
Value said wait; Patrick Payton in Round 6, Pick 4 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.16 · Pick 197 · Keyshaun Elliott · LB · rank 210
Keyshaun Elliott at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.27 · Pick 208 · Toriano Pride Jr. · CB · rank 204
A tidy little value on Toriano Pride Jr. in slot 208, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Eric McAlister · WR · rank 189
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Eric McAlister in the 219th pick, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.15 · Pick 231 · Riley Nowakowski · TE · rank 269
This one needs a full-page explanation: Riley Nowakowski in Round 7, Pick 15, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
