The Commanders treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending slot 67 on Cade Stover a full 61 spots early.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Colson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver, cornerback and other spots.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Jordan Morgan in pick 21 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Troy Fautanu at the 36th pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 43rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No edge and no loss on Adisa Isaac in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cade Stover in No. 67 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A surprising call. With wide receiver, cornerback and other spots still to address, they spent No. 100 on Junior Colson, a linebacker they were not short of.
