Washington Commanders

The Commanders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

They will need Vidal to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. They banked enough surplus on Cooper to cover a lot of smaller sins.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 5
In the 5th pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 25
Nice patience on Graham Barton, who had no business lasting to pick No. 36. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Ennis Rakestraw Jr. · CB · rank 35
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the 37th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 44
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in No. 40, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 64
Nothing to complain about; Kamren Kinchens went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 70
A quiet steal in pick 78: Devontez Walker for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
Christian Mahogany in slot 100 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
Fair-plus on Roger Rosengarten, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tommy Eichenberg. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
Luke McCaffrey at Round 5, Pick 16 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Kimani Vidal · RB · rank 253
Value said wait; Kimani Vidal in the 222nd pick says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
