Somebody in slot 174 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Jordan James, the No. 124 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had Ashton Jeanty higher than pick 12, and the running back fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Warren at the 44th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Tre Harris all the way to slot 76, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Sebastian Castro in No. 117 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
You do not let a linebacker like Jeffrey Bassa reach the Round 5 slot and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jordan James in the 174th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
They let Chase Lundt come to them and pounced at Round 6, Pick 12. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jack Kiser at pick No. 211 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay CJ West at slot 249 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
