The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Jeffrey Bassa, the No. 123 name on the board, sitting there at No. 235 like a gift left on the doorstep. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The Williams reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 7 they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tre Harris in the 38th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Kenneth Grant for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Harold Fannin Jr. in No. 80 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Devin Neal in slot 106 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
They barely believed it either: Jake Majors still on the board at pick 141. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a linebacker like Jay Higgins reach Round 5, Pick 16 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Elijah Arroyo in the 221st pick, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
PJ Williams at pick No. 223 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Jeffrey Bassa at the 235th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Circle this one: DJ Giddens at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
