There is reaching, and then there is Cedric Gray at the 56th pick. The Cowboys jumped the board by 57 and dared it to prove them wrong. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Jones falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get an anchor for the offensive line. The biggest hole, addressed.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cedric Gray in No. 56, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Braelon Allen at slot 87 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Leonard Taylor III in Round 3, Pick 32; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A cornerback of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ty'Ron Hopper. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Jalen Coker at the 216th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Trente Jones all the way to Round 7, Pick 13, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Anim Dankwah at pick No. 244, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
