The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Josaiah Stewart, the No. 41 name on the board, sitting there at slot 220 like a gift left on the doorstep.
Ayomanor has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
They barely believed it either: Wyatt Milum still on the board at pick No. 38. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jalen Royals in slot 69. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for Elic Ayomanor in pick 77; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Ashton Jeanty at the 104th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 6 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They will replay Dylan Fairchild at the 217th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Josaiah Stewart was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Lander Barton in pick No. 238 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
