The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Joe Milton III went at pick 174, a good 42 picks before the board was ready.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Landing Jones that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a building block for the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
T'Vondre Sweat at No. 56 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Braelon Allen. It fills a real need, too.
DeWayne Carter in slot 108 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had cheaper options than Christian Jones at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Isaac Guerendo at the 130th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Somehow Elijah Jones was still sitting there in the 165th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Khristian Boyd, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Joe Milton III at slot 174 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
They took Jaylan Ford at par in pick 216, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Jalen Coker in pick No. 233 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
