Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Vikings spent No. 252 on Jordan Davis, a name most had 110 spots down the list.
They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here. Torrence at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
They talked themselves into Cornelius Johnson at slot 116, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Isaac Guerendo in the 153rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Sataoa Laumea in Round 5, Pick 21 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Jarrian Jones was still sitting there in No. 167, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Xavier Thomas slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Ro Torrence here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Caedan Wallace in slot 232 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Davis in pick No. 252 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
