You can hear the double-takes from here. The Dolphins took Taulia Tagovailoa at Round 5, Pick 21, roughly 118 spots before his name belonged.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Gore Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Kris Jenkins in the 48th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Kamren Kinchens went about where he belonged in pick No. 55. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Christian Mahogany at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Luke McCaffrey in No. 152 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taulia Tagovailoa at Round 5, Pick 21 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Jaylan Ford in slot 186; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
Brevyn Spann-Ford in slot 200 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 234 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Kingsley Eguakun in pick 239 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
