Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chargers spent No. 186 on Stefon Thompson, a name most had 99 spots down the list. A F, plain and simple.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with wide receiver still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 1st overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 5 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 8th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Benson at slot 60, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid a round early for Gabriel Murphy in Round 4, Pick 8, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Justin Rogers at pick 110 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Shemar Turner come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Stefon Thompson in Round 6, Pick 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
They went early on J.J. Weaver in the 229th pick, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
