You build a draft on nights like this. Jaylin Simpson had no business being available in the 172nd overall pick, and the Eagles did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If Wilson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They went 6 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get an island corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid up for Jermaine Burton at the 51st overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Payton Wilson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 59th pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tykee Smith. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Theo Johnson in No. 137 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Darius Robinson at pick No. 156 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jaylin Simpson at Round 5, Pick 36 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Jones at slot 178, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Walter Rouse in slot 240 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Evan Williams in pick No. 248 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
