You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Giles Jackson in the 217th overall pick.
Carter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Xavier Watts in pick 77 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Quinshon Judkins at the 104th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Barrett Carter still on the board at the Round 5 slot. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They reached a country mile for Giles Jackson at slot 217, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wild overpay on Gentry Williams in Round 7, Pick 4, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Reuben Fatheree II. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
