The Chiefs spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Smael Mondon Jr., the No. 37 name on the board, in the 202nd overall pick.
Reaching for Crenshaw-Dickson left real value on the table behind him. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 31 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Walter Nolen at pick 58 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Darien Porter at the 69th pick, and the board is aghast. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
DJ Campbell in the 95th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyler Warren at pick No. 127 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 202 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tony Grimes. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
