Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers checked most of the boxes and earned a B.

Nobody else had Will Putnam anywhere near No. 253. The Chargers did, by 86 spots, and that gap is the whole story.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
The board had Rome Odunze higher than Round 1, Pick 22, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
Nice patience on Amarius Mims, who had no business lasting to No. 37. It fills a real need, too.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 23
Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick 47 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 34
Ladd McConkey at slot 50 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 84
They paid up for Blake Corum at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 89
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dominick Puni in pick No. 105. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Matt Goncalves · OT · rank 114
Matt Goncalves in the 110th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
A real head-scratcher, AJ Barner in slot 120 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 118
Blake Fisher in pick 140 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 132
The board fumbled Christian Jones all the way to pick No. 161, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 194
Trente Jones at the 181st overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 188
They barely believed it either: Cornelius Johnson still on the board at the Round 7 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Will Putnam · C · rank 339
Will Putnam at Round 7, Pick 33 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
