After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Getting McCaffrey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Adonai Mitchell in the 34th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at pick 68 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Kris Abrams-Draine at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for Mekhi Wingo at pick No. 104 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Beau Brade in the 136th overall pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luke McCaffrey in slot 182. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 7, Pick 9 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
