Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Clayton Smith at pick No. 231 is 167 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
Whatever Jalen Milroe becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Carter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
If Jalen Milroe and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 13 they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Tyler Warren at the 48th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
Fair-plus on Jake Majors, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Malachi Moore at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 115th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
