Nobody else had Demorie Tate anywhere near pick 242. The Cowboys did, by 33 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
That Baker pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Jared Verse come to them and pounced at Round 1, Pick 24. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 56 with a little surplus value in Graham Barton. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They did well to land Braden Fiske in pick No. 87, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Braelon Allen at slot 125 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
A reach for Jaylan Ford in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Javon Baker all the way to pick 213, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Demorie Tate at slot 242, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
