The phones were a trap the 49ers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C-.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Clark. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Zion Young at par in pick No. 40, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They did well to land Chase Bisontis in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bud Clark in slot 127 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A slide stopped in pick 133, with Jack Endries worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Chris McClellan at Round 4, Pick 38 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on CJ Daniels at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
