Dallas Cowboys

Williams is the plan now, and the Cowboys grade out a D.

Nobody had McKinnley Jackson this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 52 spots to get him at the 71st pick.

Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Marvin Harrison Jr. · WR · rank 1
In the 4th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.5 · Pick 5 · Caleb Williams · QB · rank 2
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 32
In No. 27 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.30 · Pick 30 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
In slot 30 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
Good price on Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 123
They talked themselves into McKinnley Jackson at pick 71, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in Round 3, Pick 24, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 127
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Chau Smith-Wade at pick 140. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 147
Jacob Cowing in the 174th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 205
Jaylan Ford slid further than he should have, and the Round 6 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Solomon Byrd · DE-EDGE · rank 261
A wild overpay on Solomon Byrd in slot 233, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 186
Steal is underselling it; Cornelius Johnson at No. 244 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
