They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Pritchett. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They are betting Worthy proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In the end it comes back to J.J. McCarthy, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 15th overall pick they get their quarterback of the future, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Amarius Mims at pick No. 34 is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached a country mile for Xavier Worthy at pick 47, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Xavier Legette in No. 68 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cedric Gray at the 103rd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A tidy little value on Christian Jones in Round 5, Pick 1, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Nehemiah Pritchett in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A quiet steal in slot 191: Grayson Murphy for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Daijun Edwards in the 193rd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ryan Flournoy in slot 231 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
