The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Donovan Edwards, the No. 186 name on the board, in Round 7, Pick 28. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They will need Griffith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
Jalon Walker in the 33rd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Trey Amos at slot 44 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cam Skattebo at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Jalen Royals higher than pick 76, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach on Chase Lundt in pick No. 150; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on JJ Pegues in No. 170; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had cheaper options than Joshua Gray at Round 5, Pick 35, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, Cam Horsley in the 190th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They jumped the gun on Cam Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Eric Gregory, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Donovan Edwards in slot 246 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Thor Griffith this early at the 249th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
