There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Alfred Collins a full 59 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

The Barton steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.16 · Pick 16 · Ashton Jeanty · RB · rank 3
Ashton Jeanty is a better player than the Round 1 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 41
Deone Walker at the 61st overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Clay Webb · OG · rank 48
Taking Clay Webb in No. 78 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.24 · Pick 125 · Lander Barton · LB · rank 91
The board fumbled Lander Barton all the way to pick No. 125, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.15 · Pick 153 · Aireontae Ersery · OT · rank 132
Aireontae Ersery in the 153rd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.31 · Pick 169 · Jack Bech · WR · rank 138
Jack Bech in Round 5, Pick 31 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.32 · Pick 170 · Kyle Monangai · RB · rank 145
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Kyle Monangai in the 170th pick, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · Nazir Stackhouse · DL · rank 209
Nazir Stackhouse at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · T.J. Sanders · DT · rank 224
This one needs a full-page explanation: T.J. Sanders in slot 189, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.33 · Pick 208 · Alfred Collins · DL · rank 267
They left a pile of value on the table to take Alfred Collins this early at pick No. 208. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.34 · Pick 248 · Shilo Sanders · S · rank 279
They reached into another round for Shilo Sanders, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor itch, scratched.
