The phones were a trap the Bears kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Landing Simon that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The veteran additions, Nelson Agholor chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. More want than need.
In pick No. 20 they get an enforcer at safety at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
In pick 27 they get a go-to option on the outside, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Omarion Hampton slipping to Round 2, Pick 7 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach the 41st overall pick and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Charles Grant at No. 91 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaylin Lane in No. 122 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in slot 148, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Kobe Hudson at Round 7, Pick 17 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A tidy bit of business in the 240th pick, where Dante Trader Jr. graded well above the range. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
