Dallas Cowboys

A solid, sensible weekend for the Cowboys: B-.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the 218th overall pick on Luke Altmyer, a name most had 47 spots down the list.

Trotter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

The Jordyn Brooks pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.7 · Pick 39 · Chris Johnson · CB · rank 32
Chris Johnson in the 39th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Lee Hunter · DT · rank 48
Value with a capital V on Lee Hunter in Round 2, Pick 29, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.29 · Pick 93 · Josiah Trotter · LB · rank 57
Josiah Trotter in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Treydan Stukes · CB · rank 96
The board had Treydan Stukes higher than slot 107, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Dametrious Crownover · OT · rank 144
Dametrious Crownover at pick No. 112 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.12 · Pick 152 · Nate Boerkircher · TE · rank 161
They went early on Nate Boerkircher in pick 152, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.14 · Pick 154 · Taylen Green · QB · rank 188
Taylen Green at pick No. 154 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.37 · Pick 177 · Kevin Coleman Jr. · WR · rank 163
Kevin Coleman Jr. in the 177th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.40 · Pick 180 · Reggie Virgil · WR · rank 167
They read the board right and Reggie Virgil was the payoff at pick 180. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.2 · Pick 218 · Luke Altmyer · QB · rank 265
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Luke Altmyer well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.34 · Pick 250 · TJ Hall · CB · rank 222
They will replay TJ Hall at No. 250 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.37 · Pick 253 · Nolan Rucci · OT · rank 253
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nolan Rucci. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
