Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
The Hunt pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Hunt pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, safety and other spots still on the board. They banked enough surplus on Hadden to cover a lot of smaller sins.
If Drake Maye and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Drake Maye at pick No. 2 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Kingsley Suamataia in slot 54, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Xavier Legette at par in No. 68, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cooper Beebe is a better player than the 85th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
A reach for Tyler Davis in the 104th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose S-EDGE. Jalyx Hunt in Round 4, Pick 36 leaves edge rusher, safety and other spots for later.
Kamal Hadden slid further than he should have, and the Round 6 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid up for Jordan Magee at pick 229 when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
