If confidence were a draft strategy, the Packers would have aced it. Sam Hartman at pick 251 is 32 spots clear of where he belonged.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. However the rest shakes out, Smith at that price is a win they earned.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Ruke Orhorhoro at pick No. 41 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Max Melton at par in the 58th pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jaylen Wright slipping to No. 91 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cedric Gray. A minor need, but a need all the same.
You do not let a safety like Tykee Smith reach slot 168 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at slot 204 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A wild overpay on Logan Lee in No. 216, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, Matthew Jones a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at pick No. 251, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
