There is reaching, and then there is Sam Hartman at the 251st pick. The Packers jumped the board by 32 and dared it to prove them wrong. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The Packers indulged a want in Taylor-Demerson while a need in edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots stayed open. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Braden Fiske
· DL
· rank 53
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get an anchor for the defensive front, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 42
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Calen Bullock
· S
· rank 75
Calen Bullock in slot 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
· S
· rank 83
A surprising call. With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent pick 88 on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, a safety they were not short of.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Isaac Guerendo
· RB
· rank 111
A real head-scratcher, Isaac Guerendo in pick No. 91 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.27
· Pick 127
· Isaiah Adams
· OT
· rank 127
No drama and no debate, Isaiah Adams went about where he belonged in the 127th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.32
· Pick 168
· Javion Cohen
· OG
· rank 168
They paid sticker price for Javion Cohen in pick 168, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.29
· Pick 204
· Dwight McGlothern
· CB
· rank 175
They barely believed it either: Dwight McGlothern still on the board at pick No. 204. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Jaylan Ford
· LB
· rank 196
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 41 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R7.23
· Pick 243
· Kenny Logan Jr.
· S
· rank 251
Kenny Logan Jr. at the 243rd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.31
· Pick 251
· Sam Hartman
· QB
· rank 283
They reached into another round for Sam Hartman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
