You can hear the double-takes from here. The Packers took Stefon Thompson at No. 245, roughly 128 spots before his name belonged. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get a premier pass rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Fair-plus on Jordan Morgan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 58th pick, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Calen Bullock slipping to the 88th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jaylen Wright slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 26 is lovely value for the running back. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kris Abrams-Draine at No. 91 is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jamari Thrash. The roster fit checks out.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 168 is the definition of value, full stop. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They read the board right and Jordan Jefferson was the payoff at the 200th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
A big swing on Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 201st overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy bit of business in pick 219, where JD Bertrand graded well above the range. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A real head-scratcher, Stefon Thompson in Round 7, Pick 25 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Sam Hartman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zion Logue this early at the Round 7 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
