Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Justin Walley, the No. 199 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 246th overall pick.
The Jones reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a disruptor off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Steal is underselling it; Keon Coleman at Round 2, Pick 11 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for D.J. James in No. 67, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Hall Jr. at the 89th pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They jumped the gun on Audric Estime, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jaden Hicks at pick 125 is the proof. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaiah Adams in pick No. 135. It fills a real need, too.
Jaylan Ford at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
By-the-book stuff, Andrew Raym at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jaylen Harrell in pick No. 217 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Matthew Jones at the 219th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let a cornerback like Justin Walley reach pick 246 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
