There is reaching, and then there is Brennan Armstrong at pick No. 219. The Packers jumped the board by 53 and dared it to prove them wrong. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Adding Steven Gilmore by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a centerfielder for the defense, even if it was a touch early. More want than need.
No drama and no debate, Byron Murphy II went about where he belonged in pick No. 41. The roster fit checks out.
Chris Braswell in pick 57 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Zak Zinter in the 91st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarrian Jones. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 135, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid a round early for Jase McClellan in pick No. 203, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Kenny Logan Jr. in the 217th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Brennan Armstrong in No. 219, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Tanner McLachlan at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
