There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Joshua Cephus a full 27 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Goncalves.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a downhill hitter at safety at fair value. More want than need.
Byron Murphy II at slot 41 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
T'Vondre Sweat in No. 57 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
They read the board right and Christian Mahogany was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Audric Estime in the 92nd pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Matt Goncalves reach pick 125 and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jarrian Jones at slot 135 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joshua Cephus this early at Round 6, Pick 28. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Omar Speights in pick 217, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 219th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Walter Rouse at pick No. 246, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
