Somebody in No. 251 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Nathaniel Watson, the No. 206 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Hartman has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Tyler Nubin at No. 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid a round early for Blake Fisher in the 58th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, DJ James in slot 88. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dominick Puni in the 91st pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Isaiah Davis this early at pick 127. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaylan Ford at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javontae Jean-Baptiste in Round 6, Pick 29, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kenny Logan Jr. at No. 216 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Sam Hartman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nathaniel Watson in the 251st overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
