The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Nathan Pickering, taking him 86 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Gray at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, T'Vondre Sweat went about where he belonged in pick 56. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Calen Bullock at the Round 2 slot is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid a round early for Blake Fisher in pick No. 89, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in the 91st pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaylen Wright in No. 124, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tommy Eichenberg at pick No. 125 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached into another round for Sincere Haynesworth, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 4 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Cedric Gray was still sitting there in pick 150, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
By-the-book stuff, Sam Hartman at the 203rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jalen Green in slot 204 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Stefon Thompson in Round 6, Pick 42 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
They talked themselves into Hayden Hatten at No. 219, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
They went early on Joshua Cephus in the 220th pick, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nathan Pickering in Round 7, Pick 26 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Walter Rouse at pick 247, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
