The war room fell hard for Jordan Toles, and it showed at Round 7, Pick 26: 31 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The Hopper pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots still on the board. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Byron Murphy II. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took T'Vondre Sweat at par in the 57th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Christian Haynes at the Round 3 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Audric Estime in Round 3, Pick 28 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at No. 125 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Ty'Ron Hopper at linebacker with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots open.
Christian Jones in Round 6, Pick 28 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Maurice Smith at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid a round early for Taulia Tagovailoa in slot 219, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan Toles at pick 246 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
