Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent pick No. 243 on Mason Fairchild, a name most had 56 spots down the list.

The Watson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered. They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Kamari Lassiter · CB · rank 27
In the 28th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 58
A reach on T'Vondre Sweat in pick 41; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 56
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in slot 57, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 107
A wild overpay on Jaden Hicks in pick No. 88, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
They went early on Khyree Jackson in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 133
Will Shipley at Round 3, Pick 36 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 128
Javon Foster at No. 126 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Javion Cohen · OG · rank 149
Value said wait; Javion Cohen in pick 129 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Andrew Raym · C · rank 194
Andrew Raym at Round 5, Pick 32 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · De'Corian Clark · WR · rank 200
De'Corian Clark in the 202nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 211
They liked Sam Hartman enough to skip the value, taking him in the 203rd pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Jawhar Jordan · RB · rank 209
A clean, defensible pick in slot 216 with a little surplus value in Jawhar Jordan. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Mason Fairchild · TE · rank 299
Mason Fairchild in pick No. 243 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 240
They let Nathaniel Watson come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
