The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Tommy Eichenberg, Round 5, Pick 32, roughly 24 picks past where he belonged.

The cost of the Jean-Baptiste reach is exactly the players who went right after him. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 24
In the 25th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 41
Chris Braswell at pick 49 is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 42
Edgerrin Cooper slipping to slot 58 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 83
Fair-plus on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 91
By-the-book stuff, Dominick Puni at the 91st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 121
Javon Foster at pick No. 127 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 144
Circle this one: Tommy Eichenberg at Round 5, Pick 32 is a fall that decides a draft. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R6.29 · Pick 204 · Javontae Jean-Baptiste · DE-EDGE · rank 229
They talked themselves into Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick 204, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 224
They went early on Frank Gore Jr. in the 216th pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Kenny Logan Jr. · S · rank 251
Kenny Logan Jr. at No. 243 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Taulia Tagovailoa · QB · rank 276
Taulia Tagovailoa in pick No. 251 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Jalen Green · S · rank 252
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalen Green. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
