A sensible, unshowy class lands the Packers a B-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Dillon Johnson a full 41 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Washington pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 27
In pick 25 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 28
They read the board right and Kool-Aid McKinstry was the payoff at No. 41. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 46
Edgerrin Cooper is a better player than Round 2, Pick 26 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Brandon Dorlus · DE-EDGE · rank 79
Brandon Dorlus at slot 88 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 84
Fair-plus on Calen Bullock, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Dillon Johnson · RB · rank 167
Value said wait; Dillon Johnson in the 126th overall pick says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Justin Rogers · DL · rank 193
A big swing on Justin Rogers at slot 169, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Tahj Washington · WR · rank 187
A tidy bit of business in the 202nd pick, where Tahj Washington graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 205
Nice patience on Jaylan Ford, who had no business lasting to No. 219. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 259
The board had cheaper options than Sam Hartman at pick No. 245, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Khalid Duke · DE-EDGE · rank 291
Khalid Duke at Round 7, Pick 35 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
