The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Jermaine Burton, the No. 62 name on the board, sitting there at the 88th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The cost of the Smith reach is exactly the players who went right after him. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Kamari Lassiter · CB · rank 27
In pick 25 they get an island corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 26
A slide stopped in the 41st pick, with Jordan Morgan worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 41
They read the board right and Devontez Walker was the payoff at No. 57. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Jermaine Burton · WR · rank 62
Circle this one: Jermaine Burton at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 84
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 120
A reasonable price with a little left over, Khyree Jackson in slot 125. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 114
Junior Colson in the 135th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Joshua Gray · OT · rank 198
Joshua Gray in pick No. 203 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 233
Matthew Jones at the Round 6 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Maurice Smith · C · rank 236
Maurice Smith at Round 6, Pick 44 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Cody Schrader · RB · rank 237
You do not let a running back like Cody Schrader reach No. 255 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
